Straiton to Dailly
A fine trail of 41km and 480m climb linking Straiton to Dailly and return using
mainly off road track with short road links.
Start at Straiton park at the north edge of the village next to the play park. Cycle
through the village south on the minor road toward Newton Stewart, beyond the
school and before the cemetery turn off right. Follow the track to Craigfad and
on up toward Knockskae. Before Knockskae go right through a metal gate onto
a forest track which goes round the south side of Glenalla Fell with a 250m push
between the tracks.
Exit the forest at MR342011, go right and then next left over the moor past Blair
(MR325025) in Glenlee wood go off left up a steep track (signposted)  following
it round over a muddy farm track onto singletrack, eventually out to the B741.
Take the next minor road left climb to Whitehill farm entrance and take the track
opposite down to Dailly and Tilly's tea room.
After a refreshment in Tilly's 200m on the same side of the road  take a track
right by the river cross at the strange bridge and follow the riverside to the
ruined castle and on through the trees to Dalquarran castle.
Go out the old drive to the minor road left then right under the railway up past
Glenlochrie  and next right marked (riding school). Go straight through the
forest and then uphill left just past High Newlands to a signposted track right.
Go along this track straight down to Glenshalloch wood but as the path
steepens (MR 297049) take the track into the quarry. At the north end of the
quarry climb up left steeply to the tree line going right at the top and out of the
quarry onto a track, go left, in 50 metres ignore the track left and continue
along a lovely (sometimes muddy) track along the side of Craigfin fell.
Join the minor road again at Spring Garden (MR303073).
Go to crosshill on minor roads.
At the south edge of Crosshill fork left onto a track (muddy past the farm then
improves) through the crossroads at MR 337058.
At the tee junction (MR355056) go left and in 400m (second track) go right
leading to a field where you will see a large pond, go around the right field edge
through a gap by the pond and climb up to a gate.
Go right 250m to a little sign 'Marias walk'. Go along the walk by the river, the
first section has steps and a hidden ditch so walk until all steps are done, then
cycle to the steel bridge, cross the river  and climb to a track, go right and
follow it out to the B7045.
If you wish you can climb through the forest from Altizourie to MR389060
where there is a track and road down to Straiton, or you may wish to return
directly by road to the start.
