Distance 24km climb 350m
The footpath on Landranger map 77
from Little Shalloch (MR451028) goes
through the edge of the forest but was
70% cyclable after the little dry spell in
March although the quad track passed to
the west of the trees at MR 434013 not
to the east as on the map.
The only little complication is from the start (at P).
Go down hill from the cross roads to the river and
follow it downstream to join the tarmac road go left
over the bridge and take the track 2nd right uphill to
the cross roads at MR 464040 through the gate, up
left and on to Little Shalloch. Climb up behind Little
Shalloch to the Gate and though the trees.
.The track is narrow so expect to push at times. There is a faint quad track beyond the trees leading to
the west side of a wood. Go through the metal gate (not the wooden one but to the right through the
wall) and descend to Knockdon. The tarmac road is the easy option to the dam but for off road......
Go right 300m, cross the burn on tarmac then immediately left to climb up to the Bradan dam (left at
the junction). The dam is a good spot for lunch, then proceed below the dam to the east side of Bradan.
There is a choice of going the forest drive past Loch Riecawer to the south end of Loch Doon or
crossing the hill to Loch Finlas and Loch Doon. The hill track is strenuous and rough. Ness Glen at the
north end of Doon has a single track on its west side starting just before the dam down to a new
bridge watch out for walkers if you go this way and it leaves a climb back to the start.
