Route in brief
35km, 250m climb/descent
Start GR 313632 at Muirsheil country park 8 km NW of Lochwinnoch
Go north from the car park at Muirshiel and stay on the track on the east side of the river
Calder. The track is constructed of 1” - 2 “ stones and is quite rough. The track may not be
shown on the map. It goes to the north of Craig of Todholes and joins the track of the
Minor railway line. Follow the track down to Kilmacolm High Dam, past Hardridge going left and
left again to reach the B788. Go left on the B788 and after ½ km turn right up past Chapel. Go
over the hill to High Mathernock (GR 325711). Turn left and after ½ km go right on the track
north passing the golf course and descending to Deval. Go right and climb out of the housing to
locate the cycle track on the old railway at the top of the hill. Follow the cycle track to Kilmacolm
for some refreshments. From the old station in Kilmacolm go 50 m west along the B786 and turn
left through two sizeable gate posts. This leads pleasantly south for 1 ½ km to the B788 and has a
few short single track loops to investigate. At the B788 go west and then south on the B786 for 1
km. Go right near Duchal mains and retrace the route back to Muirsheil country park.
