Dean Park to Galston Distance 25km, 250m climb
This is an easy loop mainly on minor roads but with some pleasant off road and a bit of tarmac cycleway from Galston to Hurlford.
Park at Dean Park signposted off the B7038 at the north end of Kilmarnock. Go through the park passing the castle on the right, cross the bridge turn left beside the river uphill to a minor road in 400m. Go right steeply uphill passing a riding school as you leave the woods. Ignore a road on the right in 400m and in another 200m go right crossing above the A77. Keep left along a rough muddy track along the edge of Craufurdland going left at the tarmac road just beside a large house.
Pass a fishery (cafe is to open here soon), exit Craufurdland going right downhill over Craufurdland Water. Next Tee jubction go right and immediately left. In 1.5km go right and in 500m left onto a rough track immediately before a cottage in a dip. In 300m go right down a singletrack in the woods. Emerging in 1km go left on a minor road. The road turns to a rough track just after which is another bit of singletrack through a bike friendly gateway on the right. Its only about800m before you are back on the road, go left along to Loudoun Kirk and take a short circuit around the old church yard. Opposite the Kirk gates is a stone bridge cross it, go right but fork off onto a track in 150m. In 400m fork left (easy to miss) pass some ponds to a burnt out house, pass it on the right out to the road. Stay on the pavement here going right to a bridge over the busy A71 and into Galston.
Just over the bridge is the Balmoral Mill shop with a cafe for a snack, parking at the rear.

From the bridge and tea room continue into town straight across the traffic lights and keeping right at the unusual Barr Castle ahead. Go right at the next junction and behind the barriers at the left of the road into a playing field. Cross it keeping right to a track. Follow this track behind houses. Keep left on the grass at the end of the track up a bank and cross onto a tarmac cycleway. Follow this for 3km but immediately after crossing a viaduct over Cessnock Water go right down the steep slope off the main track, keep right after a short rise away from the houses. Just before the A71 go left and follow tracks parallel to the main road into Hurlford and down to a pedestrian crossing on the A71 just before the roundabout. Cross the road by the pedestrian crossing go left and cross over the bridge going right immediately after, down a tarmac walkway through a silly obstacle and pleasantly by the river for 1.5km. Go left at the road, crossing the A77 by a footbridge. Go straight on through the houses but just before going below the railway line go right, in 300m go straight over the road and pavement passing a barrier. Keep left the road bends left but go right into the park before the railway bridge. Climb up the hill keeping right passed the Burns memorial and straight out to the road. Cross straight over and go first left (600m) downhill back to the start.
