Distance 27km 250m climb
I visited Bute recently (May 05) and was asked if there was any off road, so here it is. The south
island I believe is the best. Starting at Rothsay go up the Zig Zags to the top and left through a
track in Bogany woods (watch out for dog walkers) and descend again to the main road going
south to Kerrycroy.
Go through Mount Stewart gates and left down to the track along the shore eventually turn
away from the shore to reach the track junction at MR108590 taking the west track which bens
south and continues to the minor road at MR105568 go right to Kingarth for a refreshment.
From Kingarth there is a choice of three tracks to the summit at MR 083590 I recommend the
one starting from the west at MR070586 as it avoids the mud. Go over the summit (121m)and
left at the next track crossing past Loch Ascog to the B881 at Lochend go right but then take
the track going between Kirk Dam and Loch Fad toward the B878 but take the track by the
burn saving a climb and return to Rothsay
If you fancy a little more before leaving the island there is a part off road over to Ettrick bay
(cafe in the summer). Go up toward Westland farm but at the bend (MR074653) follow the
footpath signs across to Gortans/Rullecheddan (farm dog so don't hang about) then follow the
track behind Port Bannatynejoining the road near the juntion to the west of the town then
follow the road to Ettrick Bay cafe, cycle along the bay and back along the A844 and B878 for
The north island has forest tracks and the West Island Way links though to them however
the link track has a 1km push and then the return is on the main road.
