Arran mountain bike black route

Black route

Leave the ferry area turn right along the sea front. In 1km opposite the first group of buildings on the right turn sharp left up Alma road and in a further 150m right up a lane to a track beside fields then into felled forest where it becomes singletrack. Emerge at the summit at a picnic area. Go west on forest road and in a few metres take the left option. In 1km leave the main track right along a narrow rutted trail. Go left in 250m at a MTB marker down a very muddy and overgrown (summer) trail down to a tarmac road where you should go right passing Benlister and Glenkiln farms. Right at the (Ross) road and left in 250m onto the forest track.Follow the forest track for 6km keeping right at any forks. 1km beyond the second fork there is a group of wooden summerhouses on your right, 50m beyond them go left onto a narrow singletrack. 600m later emerge back onto a wide forestry track. Go right and in 300m left onto a fairly obvious singletrack to Glenashdale falls (walkers). View the falls and then descent down the fun singletrack to Whiting Bay. Go left along the sea front.

In 1km take the second left after the jetty buildings very steeply up and curving right quickly becoming very rough. The track levels and in 800m go sharply left onto a narrow track left steeply up into the forest (easy to miss). Climb very steeply for 500m but immediately before a low ruined wall leave the track to go along a very faint singletrack beside the wall, enjoy some nice singletrack, emerge at a water works. According to the map there is more singletrack right off the waterworks track (I missed it). Leave the main forest track to the left in a few metres at a sign and enjoy some singletrack down to the tarmac (Ross) road but watch out for dogs and walkers. Go right to the main road.

Follow the main road through Lamlash but as it leaves the houses uphill toward Brodick take the singletrack on the left parallel to the main road. At the top of the hill at the picnic area the map route goes left following the forest track to return via Glen Cloy. I however chose to return the way I came hoping to get more singletrack although there is a climb in the middle section.
